Bihar Prepares to Develop Sita Kund Dham, Where Lord Ram and Mata Sita Paused After Their Wedding

Motihari, Bihar: The Bihar government has announced plans to develop Sita Kund Dham in Motihari, a historic site where Lord Ram and Mata Sita are believed to have rested after their wedding. The development aims to enhance tourism and provide better facilities for pilgrims, following the model of Punaura Dham, the birthplace of Mata Janaki.

Sita Kund Dham is located in Bediwan Madhuban Panchayat, under the Pipra police station area of East Champaran district. Recognizing its historical and cultural significance, the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) began work on the site last September, with a target for completion by December this year.

Planned Development Work

According to BSTDC General Manager Chandan Chauhan, the ₹15-crore project includes:

  • Construction of boundary walls and entrance gates
  • Security arrangements
  • Beautification of the pond
  • Roads, seating areas, cafeteria, and cottages
  • Public restrooms and shops

Once completed, Sita Kund Dham will become a modern, secure, and well-managed pilgrimage and tourist destination, benefiting both visitors and the local economy. The site spans approximately 20 acres on a 12-foot-high mound and features a large sacred pond, ancient sculptures, and other historical remnants.

Historical Significance

Local tradition holds that during the Treta Yuga, Lord Ram’s wedding procession returned from Ayodhya to Janakpur. The newlywed couple, Lord Ram and Mata Sita, stopped at this location for rest. It is also believed that the ritual of removing their wedding bangles, known locally as the ‘Chauthari’, was performed here. The site also houses a Shiva temple, gardens, and several other ponds that reflect its religious and historical importance.

The development of Sita Kund Dham is expected to place the site on the national tourism map, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike.
