Bihar Police Brutality on the Rise? Doctor Assaulted, Driver Injured; Vlogger Incident Still Fresh

Patna: Ever since the change of government in Bihar, allegations of increasing police brutality have been surfacing from across the state. The latest incident at the JP Setu checkpoint has intensified public outrage, as a doctor and his driver were allegedly assaulted by traffic personnel on Sunday evening.

Driver’s Nose Fractured, Doctor Humiliated

According to reports, around 7 pm, Traffic Jamadar Upendra Sah and several constables assaulted Dr. B.N. Chaturvedi, a doctor posted at NMCH, and his driver Rajkumar. The scuffle left the driver with a fractured nose and severe injuries.

Police Dragged Driver Through the Car Window

Dr. Chaturvedi was returning to Patna from Chhapra when the incident occurred. Witnesses claim that traffic police personnel were creating space for trucks coming from the wrong direction by stopping smaller vehicles.

When the officers allegedly asked the driver to reverse the car, he was unable to do so due to lack of space. Enraged, the Jamadar reportedly forced the car window open and began beating the driver.

When Dr. Chaturvedi objected, the officers allegedly grabbed him by the collar, dragged him on the road, and verbally abused him for nearly half an hour. The doctor has also accused the police of stealing ₹1.5 lakh kept inside the vehicle during the chaos.

The driver has filed a written complaint at the Digha police station. The station in-charge has confirmed that an investigation is underway.

Allegations of Illegal Toll Collection at JP Setu

Locals claim that despite the ban on heavy vehicles on JP Setu, trucks are routinely allowed to pass through after paying illegal charges to traffic personnel. This results in frequent traffic jams and has become a persistent problem for commuters.

Vlogger Assault Case Still Fresh

This is not an isolated incident. Just last month, a similar case of police brutality at the Patna–Raghopur six-lane bridge made headlines. A motorcycle vlogger was brutally beaten during a so-called helmet-checking drive.

The viral video posted by the YouTuber showed officers hurling abuses, attempting to snatch his camera, and beating him despite repeated pleas that the camera was expensive and part of his work.

The video drew massive public outrage online and raised serious concerns about the conduct of Bihar’s traffic police.

Mounting Questions Over Law Enforcement Conduct

With back-to-back incidents of alleged police high-handedness, questions are being raised about accountability and oversight in Bihar’s law enforcement agencies. As the new government seeks to establish order, such repeated cases of brutality may become a major political and public concern.
