Bihar Police Abolishes Caste-Based Mess; 4,000 Officers to Dine Together in New Centralized Kitchen

Patna, December 12, 2025: The Bihar Police has ended its long-standing caste-based mess system. A state-of-the-art centralized kitchen and dining facility has been constructed at the Patna Police Lines, capable of serving 4,000 police personnel at once. Built at a cost of ₹18 crore, the facility marks a significant step towards promoting social equality within the police force.

Pilot Project to Begin in Patna
The new centralized kitchen, part of a pilot project, will be inaugurated soon by Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Samrat Chaudhary. Spread over 75,000 square feet, the G-4 building can accommodate 1,225 officers simultaneously: 175 on the ground floor and 375 on each of the three upper floors. The successful implementation of this pilot is expected to pave the way for similar facilities across all 39 police districts in Bihar.

Culinary Arrangements and Fees
The cooking responsibility has been entrusted to 65 skilled staff members, popularly known as ‘Jeevika Didis’. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options will be available, with a daily rotating menu. The monthly cost of meals has been fixed at ₹5,700 per officer, payable online. Officers wishing to opt out of meals are required to inform the administration in advance. The kitchen has already received ₹25 lakh worth of raw materials, and all tables and chairs have been installed.

This initiative is seen as a progressive move to foster inclusivity and camaraderie among police personnel while modernizing dining facilities across the state.
