Bihar Now Offers Online Marriage Registration from Home: Cost, Process, and Required Documents Explained

Patna, January 17, 2026: Marriage registration in Bihar has become easier and more convenient than ever. Under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, the Department of Prohibition, Excise, and Registration has streamlined the e-registration (e-Nibandhan) process, allowing couples to complete the procedure from home without repeated visits to government offices or submitting multiple hard copies.

No Physical Documents Required
Ajay Yadav, Secretary of the department, clarified that the online registration system is designed entirely for the convenience of citizens. Physical documents are no longer mandatory. Applications submitted online are reviewed daily by staff, and if any corrections are needed, applicants are informed online and can resubmit digitally.

Simplified Process Without Affidavits
Couples no longer need to submit any affidavits to register their marriage. Applicants can visit https://enibandhan.bihar.gov.in at any time to apply online. The process involves a nominal fee: ₹100 at the time of application and ₹350 for the certificate, totaling approximately ₹450. Applicants can select the appointment date, time, and nearest office. On the scheduled day, both parties, along with three witnesses, must visit the office for photographs and verification. The marriage certificate is issued immediately, and the department provides updates via SMS at every stage. Applicants can also track their application status online.

Required Documents
No identity proof, residence proof, age proof, photographs, or marriage-related documents are required to be uploaded.

Legal Security and Statistics
Marriage registration provides legal recognition and protection to couples, regardless of religion, including interfaith marriages. According to departmental records, a total of 18,465 marriages were registered under the Special Marriage Act in 2023 and 2024—9,493 in 2023 and 8,972 in 2024. During this period, 5,693 marriages were also solemnized.

With this initiative, Bihar aims to make marriage registration simple, affordable, and accessible to everyone, eliminating bureaucratic hurdles while ensuring legal validity.
