Bihar Gets Its First Government Solar Power Supply as Lakhisarai Plant Goes Live

In a landmark step toward clean and sustainable energy, Bihar has begun supplying electricity generated from its first government-owned solar power plant. The historic initiative was launched in Kajra, Lakhisarai district, marking a new chapter in the state’s renewable energy journey.

For the first time, electricity produced from a large-scale government solar project—popularly referred to as “Sarkari Suraj” (Government Sun)—has reached households through the state grid. Until now, solar power in Bihar was largely limited to rooftop installations by individual consumers.

According to the Energy Department, power evacuation from the Kajra Solar Power Plant has successfully commenced through a 132 kV transmission line and a 100 MVA, 33/132 kV transformer, which has been fully energized. The plant has been connected to the grid substations at Haveli Kharagpur and Lakhisarai, ensuring smooth power distribution.

Energy Department Secretary and Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited, Manoj Kumar Singh, said the achievement was made possible through continuous monitoring and coordinated efforts of the Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) and the Bihar State Power Transmission Company Limited (BSPTCL).

“This project is a major milestone in strengthening Bihar’s power infrastructure and promoting renewable energy. It will ensure uninterrupted and reliable electricity supply to consumers,” Singh said.

Battery Storage to Ensure Power During Peak Hours

One of the most significant features of the Kajra Solar Power Plant is its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). While the plant will provide uninterrupted power during daytime, the stored energy will enable electricity supply for 4 to 5 hours during peak demand periods, enhancing grid stability.

Senior BSPGCL officials stated that the Kajra project is among the largest solar projects in the country integrated with battery storage systems, positioning Bihar as a leader in green energy adoption.

Investment and Future Expansion

The project is being developed in two phases.

  • Phase One involves an investment of ₹1,810 crore, covering 185 MW of solar power capacity along with 254 MWh of battery storage.
  • Phase Two, estimated at ₹1,055 crore, will add 116 MW of solar capacity and 241 MWh of battery storage, with completion targeted by January 2027.

Once fully operational, the Kajra Solar Power Plant will have a total installed capacity of 301 MW and a battery storage capacity of 495 MWh, significantly boosting Bihar’s renewable energy portfolio.

A Green Leap for Bihar

The commissioning of Bihar’s first government-run solar power plant reflects the state’s commitment to sustainable development and clean energy. Officials believe the project will reduce dependence on conventional power sources, cut carbon emissions, and provide long-term economic and environmental benefits.

With the Kajra plant now live, Bihar has taken a decisive step toward a greener, more resilient power future.
