Bihar Female Teachers to Get Two-Year Childcare Leave and Home-District Posting

Patna, Bihar: Female teachers in Bihar are set to receive two major benefits. The state government has announced plans to provide posting near their home districts and up to two years (730 days) of childcare leave for mothers to care for their newborns.

Childcare Leave for Two Years

Bihar’s Education Minister, Sunil Kumar, announced in the Legislative Council that female teachers will be eligible for 730 days of childcare leave during their service, in line with the central government’s 2015 gazette notification. A standard operating procedure (SOP) has been drafted, and formal orders are expected within the next 15 days.

The minister clarified that salaries will continue during maternity or childcare leave, and any discrepancies or unpaid dues will be addressed immediately. Officials who withhold or cut pay will face strict action.

Home-District Postings Under Consideration

The government is also seriously considering assigning female teachers to schools in their home districts, ensuring they do not face difficulties traveling to other districts for work. This proposal was welcomed following concerns raised by opposition leader Rabri Devi about the challenges female teachers face when posted away from their families.

Minister Sunil Kumar assured that both initiatives aim to support female teachers in balancing professional responsibilities with motherhood, promoting a more inclusive and family-friendly working environment.
