Bihar Doctor Defrauded of ₹19 Lakh via ‘Digital Arrest’; Cyber Gang Mastermind Arrested in Delhi

Ara/Delhi: In a high-profile cybercrime case, Bihar’s Bhojpur police have arrested the mastermind behind a ₹19 lakh scam carried out through a ‘digital arrest’ scheme. The accused, Upendra Singh, was apprehended in Delhi’s Model Town area after duping a local doctor by impersonating an ATS officer. Authorities revealed that Singh has links to Rajasthan.

How the Scam Unfolded

On June 26, 2025, Dr. Ram Niwas of Ara Sadar Hospital received a phone call from Singh, who claimed to be an officer from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Singh told Dr. Niwas that a terrorist had been caught with his Aadhaar and mobile details, and that a Pune court had issued an arrest warrant against him. To avoid arrest, the doctor was coerced into transferring ₹19 lakh to bank accounts controlled by the cybercriminal.

Mastermind Caught in Delhi

Bhojpur Police Superintendent Raj confirmed that following Dr. Niwas’s complaint, the cybercrime team tracked Singh to Delhi. Acting in coordination with the Delhi Police, officers raided Vijaynagar locality in Model Town and arrested Singh. At the time of his arrest, Singh was found with a mobile phone containing crucial evidence linked to the fraud.

Rajasthan Connection and Bank Role

Cyber DSP Sneh Setu disclosed that Singh is originally from Bharatpur, Rajasthan, and orchestrated the scam from Delhi. Investigations also revealed a suspicious role played by a bank deputy manager, Avinash, who allegedly facilitated opening fraudulent bank accounts for a commission. Police are continuing their probe into this accomplice.

This arrest marks a major breakthrough in tackling interstate cyber fraud and highlights the growing menace of digital scams targeting unsuspecting citizens.
