Patna, Bihar: Sunil Nayak, a 2005-batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre and Inspector General of Fire Services, has been arrested in Patna in connection with a serious case of custodial assault and attempted murder (Section 307) involving former Andhra Pradesh MP K. Raghuram Krishna Raju. Andhra Pradesh police had traveled to Patna to effect the arrest, and after his court appearance, Nayak will be taken to Andhra Pradesh on transit remand for further investigation.
High-Drama Arrest in Patna
The arrest unfolded amid high tension outside Nayak’s official residence in Shastri Nagar, Patna. Home Guard personnel in track suits were seen on standby in support of the IPS officer as Andhra Pradesh police took him into custody. Nayak is accused of assaulting former MP Raghuram Krishna Raju during his tenure in Andhra Pradesh CID, including allegedly attempting to kill him while in custody. Following considerable commotion, authorities successfully secured his arrest.
Background of the 2021 Controversy
The case dates back to 2021, when Nayak was serving in Andhra Pradesh CID. At that time, under his directives, former MP Raghuram Krishna Raju was taken into custody in Narsapuram. The MP alleged severe physical assault during detention, prompting political uproar. Subsequent court intervention led to the registration of a case against Nayak under serious charges, including attempted murder (Section 307).
Renewed Legal Action
Nayak had previously secured legal relief, but his bail was recently revoked, prompting the active intervention of Andhra Pradesh police. Early Monday morning, the team conducted a thorough operation at Nayak’s residence and took him into custody with strong local police security measures in place.
Transit to Andhra Pradesh
Following his arrest, Andhra Pradesh police escorted Nayak to the Patna Civil Court, where they will request a transit remand. Upon approval, he will be transported via air or road under legal supervision to Andhra Pradesh, where further questioning and investigation will take place.
Tension at IG’s Residence
News of the arrest drew a large crowd to Nayak’s residence. While some Home Guard personnel and officials expressed anger, the Andhra Pradesh police proceeded with legal formalities and successfully completed the arrest.
