Patna: Bihar is set to take a giant leap in the field of nuclear energy, promising a brighter and more self-reliant future for the state. Initial surveys for nuclear power plants in the districts of Banka, Nawada, and Siwan have been completed under the Central Government’s Small Modular Reactor (SMR) initiative. Following reports from NPCIL and NTPC, construction preparations are moving forward, with work expected to commence in the financial year 2027-28.
The survey, conducted after Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s announcement in June 2025, examined potential sites for nuclear plants in the three districts. The initiative is expected not only to make Bihar more energy self-sufficient but also to boost industrial growth across the state. Work is now progressing towards the Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage.
Groundwork Begins in Banka and Nawada
According to the survey, Banka and Nawada have emerged as the most suitable locations for nuclear power plants. Both districts meet essential criteria such as land availability and population density, enabling official groundwork to begin. However, the report highlighted a potential challenge — adequate water supply is critical for cooling nuclear reactors. On average, a nuclear plant requires more than 1,800 liters of water per megawatt of electricity generated per hour.
Siwan: Ample Water but Seismic Concerns
Siwan district was found to have a plentiful water supply, but its location poses a significant seismic risk. Being in a sensitive earthquake zone, ensuring structural stability is paramount for any nuclear installation. A final decision on Siwan will be taken only after detailed recommendations from the central government.
Small Modular Reactors to Transform Bihar
Unlike traditional large-scale plants, the SMR technology under consideration offers a modern, compact, and safer alternative. The survey meticulously assessed land, connectivity, and safety standards. If all goes according to plan, work on the sites is expected to begin by 2027-28. The report submitted by the joint NPCIL-NTPC team is now in the final stages of review by the concerned electricity authorities.
With this initiative, Bihar is poised to illuminate homes with nuclear energy while accelerating industrial growth, marking a new era in the state’s energy landscape.
