Varanasi, December 12, 2025: Varanasi has introduced India’s first hydrogen-powered cruise, inaugurated by Union Minister Sarvanand Sonwal. Operating four times daily, this eco-friendly cruise combines modern technology with the city’s cultural heritage, offering a sustainable way to experience the Ganga.
A Milestone in Green Technology
Flagged off from Namo Ghat on Thursday, the cruise is currently managed by the Indian Waterways Authority. The vessel is entirely based on indigenous technology, producing zero emissions or noise pollution. Each cruise can accommodate up to 50 passengers, allowing tourists to enjoy morning rides as well as the evening Ganga Aarti in complete comfort and sustainability. Five such cruises are now operational from Namo Ghat, with plans to expand operations in response to growing demand.
Hydrogen-Powered Engine
The cruise’s most remarkable feature is its hydrogen-based engine, designed by a professor from Banaras Hindu University. The vessel runs primarily on hydrogen fuel, with an electric engine as a backup if hydrogen supply runs low. This innovative engine ensures that the cruise produces neither air nor noise pollution, making it a landmark project in green energy adoption.
A Luxury Eco-Cruise Experience
Designed as a luxury cruise, it offers tourists a smooth, silent, and environmentally friendly ride along the Ganga, from Namo Ghat to Ravidas Ghat. The initiative aligns with the city’s development vision under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, blending modern infrastructure with Varanasi’s ancient cultural heritage.
