Patna: The Bhorey Assembly constituency in Gopalganj, Bihar, witnessed a triangular contest in the 2025 Bihar Assembly Elections. The Janata Dal (United) [JDU] candidate Sunil Kumar, who is also the state’s current Education Minister, emerged victorious, defeating Preeti Kinnar of Jan Suraj Party and CPI (ML) (L) candidate Dhananjay.
Election Outcome
After 26 rounds of counting, Sunil Kumar secured 101,469 votes, leading Preeti Kinnar by 16,163 votes. This victory reflects the continuing dominance of JDU in the region, while marking a historic contest as the Jan Suraj Party fielded a transgender candidate for this SC-reserved seat.
A Triangular Battle
The contest was intense, with Preeti Kinnar, Dhananjay, and Sunil Kumar vying for the seat. Despite her strong grassroots presence and social work in the community, Preeti Kinnar trailed behind, securing only 85,306 votes cumulatively. Dhananjay also lagged considerably in the final count.
Who is Preeti Kinnar?
Preeti Kinnar, a 41-year-old transgender activist from Sonbarsa, Sitamarhi, currently residing in Kalyanpur, Bhorey, has been active in politics for four years. She has been deeply involved in social service, assisting underprivileged sections and organizing marriages for poor girls. Despite her strong connection with marginalized communities, the historic election victory of Sunil Kumar proved decisive.
Preeti Kinnar has also faced controversies, including allegations of caste misrepresentation, which she denied, stating her commitment to public service as her main focus.
Bhorey Constituency in Perspective
Bhorey has witnessed 16 elections so far. The Congress has won 8 times, while JDU, BJP, and RJD have won 2 times each. Other parties, including the Janata Party, have also had brief victories. This election adds to JDU’s growing influence in the constituency, reinforcing Sunil Kumar’s political stronghold.
