Bhopal: In a disturbing incident in Gautam Nagar, a 27-year-old youth brutally murdered a 50-year-old labourer sleeping on a footpath — just hours after a bitter breakup with his girlfriend. The accused, Kartik Rathore, was arrested within two hours of the crime after police traced him through CCTV footage.
Breakup Triggered Rage Moments After Birthday Celebration
According to police, Kartik had been out celebrating his birthday with friends on Tuesday night. Around 2 AM, while returning home, he got into a heated argument over the phone with his girlfriend, who lives in Indore. The argument ended in a breakup, leaving Kartik enraged and emotionally unstable.
On his way back, he encountered Suresh Kushwaha (50) — a daily-wage worker who regularly slept on the footpath near the Gautam Nagar police station. Kartik asked him for a beedi, which Suresh refused. During the exchange, Suresh allegedly spat, and the spit landed on Kartik’s shoe, leading to a brief verbal altercation. Kartik then walked away.
Returned at Dawn and Killed Him With a Stone
But the anger did not subside.
At around 5:15 AM, Kartik returned to the same spot, found Suresh asleep, and attacked him with a heavy stone lying nearby. He struck Suresh on the head three times, killing him on the spot, and fled.
Morning passersby discovered the body and alerted the police.
Murder Near Police Station — Accused Arrested Swiftly
The murder took place barely 100 metres from Gautam Nagar police station. With heavy foot traffic in the area, police acted swiftly.
SHO Mahendra Singh Thakur said the team immediately pulled CCTV footage from nearby locations. Kartik was identified and arrested within two hours of the crime being reported.
A case of murder has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
