Bhopal: Tensions erupted in Bhopal as Hindu organizations staged an aggressive protest over signage and historical name issues. Protesters replaced the “Islampur” signs with posters reading “Jagdishpur” and also voiced opposition concerning the Babri Masjid.
Signboards Renamed to Jagdishpur
The protests centered on the Lambakheda–Jagdishpur route, where some signboards still displayed the old name “Islampur.” In 2023, the state government officially renamed Islampur to Jagdishpur, but a few signs had not been updated. Chandrashekhar Tiwari, president of the Hindu Utsav Samiti, led the demonstrators in placing “Jagdishpur” posters over the outdated signs. He stated that tampering with the historical and original name of the region is unacceptable, emphasizing that this is not merely a question of renaming but a matter of public sentiment.
Demands for Immediate Action
Protesters demanded that all signboards reflect the official name “Jagdishpur” and that damaged kilometer markers be repaired promptly. They also called for a fair investigation and action against those responsible for vandalism. Local authorities assured that the matter is under investigation and necessary steps would be taken soon.
Babri Masjid Opposition
The demonstrators also protested at the No. 2 bus stop against the Babri Masjid. They suggested that any mosque to be constructed should be named after figures like Abdul Kalam or Ashfaqulla Khan instead of Babur, stating that a mosque in Babur’s name would not be tolerated.
Police Intervention
During the protest, some members carried posters labeling public toilets as “Babar Toilets.” Police intervened and seized the posters, leading to a brief scuffle between the protesters and law enforcement.
The protest highlights ongoing sensitivities in the region regarding historical names and communal sentiments, reflecting the charged atmosphere in Bhopal.
