Bhopal Road Turns Death Trap: 7-Foot-Deep Crater Lies Unrepaired for Months, Raising Fears of Noida-like Tragedy

A dangerously damaged road near Bhopal has sparked serious safety concerns, as a massive crater—nearly 7 feet deep and 5 feet wide—has remained unrepaired for over four months, despite repeated complaints by villagers. The road, constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), runs through Khamkheda village and now stands as a grim reminder of alleged administrative negligence and poor infrastructure monitoring.

The collapse reportedly occurred during the monsoon season near a culvert on the two-kilometre-long stretch. Since then, the gaping hole in the middle of the road has turned into a potential death trap, especially for two-wheelers and small vehicles that frequently use the route.

Accidents Waiting to Happen

Residents say that daily commuters narrowly escape serious accidents. A recent video of the site has gone viral on social media, drawing comparisons to the tragic Noida incident, where a tech professional lost his life after his car plunged into a water-filled crater.

The video was recorded and shared by Mohan Singh Jat, Vice-President of the District Panchayat, who stated that during his inspection, a motorcyclist narrowly avoided falling into the pit by braking at the last moment. “Had he been a few seconds late, it could have resulted in a fatal accident,” Jat said.

Repeated Complaints, No Action

Villagers, including local resident Sumer Singh, claim they have repeatedly reported the issue to concerned authorities, but no concrete action has been taken so far. The matter was also raised during the District Panchayat’s general assembly on Wednesday, where officials assured that repairs would be carried out soon—an assurance locals say they have heard many times before.

MP Assures Inspection

Taking cognizance of the issue after media reports, Bhopal Lok Sabha MP Alok Sharma said he would personally visit the site upon returning to the city. He added that he would inspect the road along with officials responsible for overseeing PMGSY projects and ensure corrective measures are implemented without delay.

Attempts to contact PWD Chief Engineer (Bhopal Zone) Sanjay Mushke were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone was reportedly not operational.

Public Safety at Stake

As the crater continues to pose a grave risk, villagers fear that without immediate intervention, the road could witness a fatal accident at any moment. The situation raises troubling questions about accountability, quality control in public infrastructure projects, and the responsiveness of authorities to citizen complaints.

For now, commuters using the road are left to rely on luck—hoping that the next journey does not turn tragic.
