In a bold and meticulously planned operation, the Bhilwara police carried out a major crackdown on illegal sand (bajri) mining and transportation along the Banas River in Rajasthan’s Jahazpur subdivision, seizing heavy machinery and vehicles used by mining mafias.
Despite the cancellation of sand mining leases following a Supreme Court order, illegal extraction continues unabated in the region. Acting on intelligence inputs, the District Special Team (DST) launched a surprise operation in plain clothes, adopting a cinematic-style strategy to outsmart the offenders.
During the operation, members of the DST crossed the river by riding inside a dumper truck, while another team was already positioned on the opposite bank in a Scorpio vehicle, effectively blocking all escape routes. The swift action left those involved in illegal mining stunned and unable to flee.
As part of the crackdown, the police seized five JCB machines, three dumpers, and thirteen tractors engaged in illegal mining and transportation activities. All seized vehicles were moved to the respective police stations for further legal proceedings.
According to police officials, in the Jahazpur police station area, three JCBs, three dumpers, and ten tractors were confiscated, while two JCB machines and three tractors were seized from the Pander police station jurisdiction. Investigations are underway to identify the individuals and networks providing protection and logistical support to illegal mining operations along the Banas River.
The operation caused panic among those involved in illegal mining. District authorities have issued a stern warning, stating that illegal mining in the Banas River will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Officials further asserted that such enforcement drives will continue with the same intensity in the coming days.
The action is being seen as a significant blow to the mining mafia and a strong signal of the administration’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and Supreme Court directives.
