Bengaluru, February 12, 2026: A woman from Kolkata has filed a police complaint in Bengaluru, alleging that her husband, identified as Syed Imtiaz, deceived her into a relationship, converted her to Islam, married her, and abandoned her after the birth of their daughter. The case has sparked discussions on social media, with the victim sharing her ordeal in a video that has gone viral.
The woman, a Hindu from Kolkata, said she first met Imtiaz on Instagram, where he followed her and initiated a friendship. After developing a relationship, Imtiaz reportedly proposed marriage. Ignoring her family’s objections, the woman married him on July 18, 2025. She also gave birth to their daughter during the marriage.
According to the complaint filed at the High Grounds Police Station, the woman claims that Imtiaz manipulated her into converting to Islam, renamed her Zainab, and later abandoned both her and their child. She also alleges that Imtiaz’s parents were complicit and unsupportive, refusing to let her enter their home, leaving her homeless and struggling to find shelter for herself and her young daughter.
Seeking justice, the victim obtained legal assistance and formally lodged an FIR. She told police that the accused had promised a happy life together in Kolkata, but instead left her stranded in Bengaluru. She also reported receiving threats on her lawyer’s phone after posting the viral video.
Authorities are investigating the case. The woman’s complaint has reignited conversations around coercion, religious conversion, and exploitation in relationships facilitated via social media.
