Bengaluru:
In a shocking incident that has once again raised serious questions over police accountability, a Bengaluru Police Inspector was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹4 lakh. The incident, which took place on January 29, was recorded on video and has since gone viral, showing the officer shouting loudly and creating a dramatic scene after being detained by Lokayukta officials.
According to the Lokayukta police, the accused officer, Inspector Govindraju, was posted at P. Agrahara Police Station. He was trapped following a complaint filed by MD Akbar, who alleged that the inspector had demanded a total bribe of ₹5 lakh in exchange for providing relief in a criminal case.
Bribe Demand Linked to Bail Promise
Investigators stated that the inspector had already accepted ₹1 lakh earlier from the complainant. When he allegedly arrived to collect the remaining ₹4 lakh, Lokayukta officials caught him in the act. A case has been registered against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and further investigation is underway.
Sources revealed that the complainant was facing a cheating case, and the inspector allegedly promised to help secure bail in return for the bribe.
Video Sparks Outrage
A video of the incident shows Inspector Govindraju shouting and resisting as Lokayukta officers confront him. The footage has triggered widespread outrage on social media and intensified criticism of corruption within the police force.
Police Commissioner Condemns Conduct
Reacting strongly to the viral video, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao condemned the inspector’s behavior. In a post on social media platform X, he described the incident as “extremely shameful”, stating that such acts tarnish the image of the police force.
“Another disgraceful act in police uniform. Karnataka has over one lakh police personnel who feel demoralised because of such incidents,” the Commissioner wrote.
Investigation Continues
Lokayukta officials confirmed that the probe is ongoing and strict legal action will be taken based on evidence collected. The incident has once again highlighted the need for stringent oversight and zero tolerance towards corruption in law enforcement agencies.
