Bhopal: The discovery of beef in a vehicle from Bhopal’s modern government-run slaughterhouse has triggered a political storm in the state capital. Reports confirmed that a container carrying 26 tons of meat, seized on December 17, included beef, sparking outrage across the city.
In response, Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) Chairman Kishan Suryavanshi issued a stern warning, saying, “No matter who is responsible, they will not be spared. Whether it is a small-time offender or a senior official, action will be taken, and justice will be served to the fullest extent.” He added that the slaughterhouse proposal had never been discussed in the council and that anyone attempting to protect those responsible would face strict consequences.
Opposition Demands Resignations
Leader of the Opposition, Shabista Zaki, leveled serious allegations against the mayor and council, claiming that such a sensitive public issue was passed within the MIC (Mayor-in-Council) without discussion in the full council. She demanded the immediate resignation of the mayor and all members involved, terming the act a violation of democratic norms.
Veterinary Officer’s Role Under Scrutiny
The role of BMC veterinary officer Dr. Beniprasad Gaur has also come under the scanner. Official records show that the officer certified the slaughter of 85 buffaloes over 15 years old at the facility. However, police samples later confirmed the presence of beef, raising questions about whether cows were slaughtered under the guise of buffalo meat with official sanction.
How the Scandal Unfolded
The incident came to light when Hindu organizations intercepted a container near the police control room on the night of December 17. Subsequent investigations revealed that 160 calves had been transported via Betul on the nights of December 15 and 16 to Bhopal, intended for shipment to Mumbai. Following the revelation, the Bhopal slaughterhouse in Jinsi has been sealed.
The scandal has sparked widespread protests by Hindu groups and Congress workers in Bhopal, demanding bulldozers be deployed at the homes of the accused and FIRs be filed against responsible officials.
