Kolkata: A controversy has erupted at a well-known restaurant in Kolkata after an alleged incident in which beef was served instead of mutton. Based on a complaint filed by actor and YouTuber Sayak Chakraborty, the police have arrested a waiter of the restaurant and launched an investigation into the matter.
The incident reportedly took place on Friday night at a popular restaurant located on Park Street, Kolkata’s prominent nightlife hub. Sayak Chakraborty had gone to the restaurant for dinner along with two friends and ordered mutton sticks. However, he has alleged that the restaurant staff served beef instead of mutton without informing them.
A senior officer of Kolkata Police confirmed that a case has been registered and a restaurant employee has been arrested. “The matter is under investigation and necessary legal action is being taken,” the officer said.
Realisation After Second Dish Was Served
The restaurant in question is Olypub, one of the city’s oldest and most popular eateries. According to Chakraborty, the dish was placed on the table without any clarification. Believing it to be mutton as ordered, the group consumed the food.
The alleged mix-up came to light only when another dish was brought to the table. At that point, Chakraborty claims, the restaurant staff informed them that the earlier dish was beef, while the newly served item was mutton.
Allegations Captured on Video
A video of the incident, recorded by Chakraborty, has surfaced on social media. In the video, he can be heard narrating the sequence of events, stating that despite ordering mutton sticks, beef steak was served. He alleged that the staff placed the dish on the table and left without any explanation.
Chakraborty further claimed in the video that the staff later admitted that the first dish was beef. He questioned how mutton could be mistaken for beef and expressed strong objection, stating that he belongs to a Brahmin family and had specifically ordered mutton.
Police Action
Following the incident, Chakraborty left the restaurant and filed a formal complaint at Park Street Police Station the same night. Acting on the complaint, police registered a case and arrested one restaurant employee on Saturday.
Police officials have said the investigation is ongoing to determine whether the act was intentional or the result of negligence.
