Bastar, Chhattisgarh: In a deeply disturbing incident, a young girl in Bastar was reportedly kept locked in a dark room for 20 years by her foster family under the pretext of protecting her from a suspected stalker. The girl, now 20, had been confined since she was eight years old, rarely seeing sunlight or interacting with anyone.
The case came to light when Social Welfare Department officials intervened and rescued her from the foster home. She was subsequently brought to the Korchuli Ashram near Jagdalpur for rehabilitation.
Physical and Psychological Trauma
Officials at the ashram reported that the girl struggles to respond even when her name is called. Her eyesight has severely deteriorated due to prolonged absence of sunlight, and she is in a state of shock from years of isolation.
Medical evaluations indicate that the chances of fully restoring her vision are extremely limited, though she is gradually learning to walk with support and respond to her surroundings.
Investigation Underway
Bastar Collector Harish S. confirmed that the Social Welfare Department is investigating the foster family for criminal negligence, illegal confinement, and human rights violations. Authorities are questioning her family and reviewing the circumstances that led to such prolonged captivity.
Department sources revealed that the foster family justified their actions by claiming fear that a local boy, allegedly a habitual offender, might sexually assault the girl if she went outside.
Slow Steps Toward Recovery
Despite the trauma, officials and caretakers at Korchuli Ashram are hopeful about her gradual rehabilitation. Sister Clarelit stated:
“The good news is that she is slowly learning to respond and walk with support.”
The incident has raised serious concerns over the protection of vulnerable children and the abuse of foster care systems in the region.
