Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh: A section of the right-bank canal of the Bargi Dam on the Narmada River has collapsed, sending a flood of water into surrounding villages and agricultural fields. The breach has affected nearly half a dozen villages, causing widespread crop damage. Authorities have temporarily stopped water supply through the canal to contain the situation.
The damaged section of the canal near Sagra-Jhapani allowed water to spill into nearby fields, submerging crops and impacting several farmers. District Collector Raghavendra Singh stated that administrative officers, police, and Bargi Dam officials reached the site immediately after receiving reports of the breach. The maximum water flow from the damaged canal was directed toward the Narrai Nala, but by evening, the situation was brought under control, and excess water began receding.
SDM of Bargi, Abhishek Singh, reported that the breach occurred around 12 PM on Sunday at the transition curve upstream of RD 6.94 km near the Narrai Aqueduct on the right-bank canal. Water discharge from the dam was immediately stopped, and all gates downstream of the damaged section were opened to reduce pressure. By evening, the base of the damaged canal was visible, indicating successful mitigation efforts.
Villages including Sagra-Jhapani, Bamhnoda, Rosra, Charghat, Pipariyakala, and parts of Ghana were affected, but officials confirmed that no homes were flooded and no casualties were reported. Residents were alerted promptly to prevent any harm.
Execution Engineer Shraddha Bansodkar said repair work will begin Monday morning, with all necessary machinery and materials already on-site to restore the canal to full functionality. Compensation surveys will be conducted for farmers whose crops were damaged.
