Jodhpur: Former Maharaja of Jodhpur and head of the Marwar royal family, Maharaja Gaj Singh II, is celebrating his 78th birthday today. Widely revered as ‘Bapji’ by the people of Marwar, he resides in the iconic Umaid Bhawan Palace—one of the world’s largest private residences, estimated to be worth nearly ₹25,000 crore. His life journey, marked by early responsibility, royal legacy, and modern stewardship, continues to inspire generations.
Born into the illustrious Rathore dynasty, Gaj Singh II ascended the Marwar throne at the tender age of four following the tragic death of his father, Maharaja Hanwant Singh, in a plane crash in 1952. The sudden loss thrust the young prince into a position of immense responsibility, shaping his character and preparing him early for leadership and maturity.
Education Rooted in Global Excellence
After completing his early education in India, Gaj Singh II went on to study at the prestigious Eton College in England, followed by higher education at the University of Oxford. He returned to India in 1970, determined to preserve the royal heritage while adapting it to the demands of a modern, democratic era. Balancing tradition with progress, he emerged as a dignified custodian of Marwar’s cultural legacy.
Umaid Bhawan Palace: Symbol of Heritage and Grandeur
The Umaid Bhawan Palace holds a central place in Maharaja Gaj Singh II’s life and legacy. Built by his grandfather Maharaja Umaid Singh, the palace stands as an architectural marvel and a symbol of Jodhpur’s royal identity. Under Gaj Singh’s stewardship, the palace was not only meticulously preserved but also transformed into a global landmark. In collaboration with the Taj Group, part of the palace was developed into a world-class luxury hotel, while other sections continue to serve as the royal residence and a museum. Today, it is regarded as one of India’s most valuable heritage properties.
Family and Royal Lineage
Maharaja Gaj Singh II is married to Hemlata Rajye, daughter of the Raja of Poonch. The couple has two children—daughter Shivranjani Rajye and son Shivraj Singh, the Yuvraj of Marwar. Shivraj Singh gained international recognition as a professional polo player and represented India at prestigious tournaments across the world.
Polo Glory and a Life-Altering Tragedy
Shivraj Singh’s promising polo career saw him emerge as one of India’s top players with a +3 handicap. His team, the Jodhpur Eagles, achieved notable victories in countries including England, Brazil, South Africa, and Switzerland. However, a tragic accident during a polo match in Jaipur on February 18, 2005, resulted in a severe brain hemorrhage, leaving him in a coma for a prolonged period. Though he survived, the incident permanently altered his life. His continued struggle and resilience remain a source of inspiration.
A Legacy Beyond Royalty
Throughout his life, Maharaja Gaj Singh II has emphasized education, culture, and social responsibility. He has represented Indian royal heritage on several international platforms and is known for his refined demeanor, humility, and commitment to preserving history. Even in the modern era, he remains a respected figure and a living symbol of Jodhpur and Marwar’s identity.
As he celebrates his 78th birthday today, Maharaja Gaj Singh II is receiving warm wishes from across India and abroad. Grace, dignity, and tradition define his legacy—one that continues to resonate far beyond palace walls.
