Banda, Uttar Pradesh: The unauthorized release of notorious Noida-based scrap mafia and gangster Ravindra Nagar, alias Ravi Kana, from Banda Jail has sparked a major controversy. In response, the jailer Vikram Singh Yadav has been suspended, and a case has been registered against Jail Superintendent Anil Gautam and several prison guards.
According to reports, the incident came to light after Jail Police Chowki In-Charge Anurag Pandey filed a formal complaint. Considering the seriousness of the matter, the administration and police intensified the investigation. A Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by the Additional Superintendent of Police, has been formed to probe the case.
Earlier, the DIG of the Prayagraj zone visited the district jail, recording statements from the jail superintendent, prisoners, and staff. CCTV footage from the jail premises was also thoroughly examined. Based on preliminary findings, a case was registered at Kotwali Nagar Police Station on Tuesday against the jailer and the superintendent.
Police Superintendent Palash Bansal stated that Ravi Kana, who was imprisoned in Banda’s district jail in August 2024, was released on Thursday evening without any written judicial order or intimation to the court. Following the incident, the CJM Court of Gautam Buddh Nagar summoned the jail superintendent for clarification. On the orders of the DG (Jails), jailer Vikram Singh Yadav was suspended, and an inquiry into the superintendent’s conduct was initiated.
A five-member SOG team conducted a four-hour inspection of the district jail, reviewing CCTV footage and documents dating back over a fortnight. Dozens of prisoners and more than half a dozen jail staff were interrogated.
With the case now registered, the jail superintendent, suspended jailer, and prison guards face increased scrutiny. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing comprehensive investigation.
