Ballia/Ghazipur: The 132-kilometer Greenfield Expressway stretching from Jangipur in Ghazipur, UP, to Manjhi in Bihar is set to have its first phase operational by December. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has stepped up construction speed despite recent floods and heavy rainfall, aiming to open the section from Haldi (Ballia) to Jangipur (Ghazipur) on schedule.
Faster Access for Local Residents
Initially, the NHAI planned to open the expressway only up to Fefna, but accelerated progress has extended the operational stretch to Haldi. Currently, travelers from Ballia need to cover an additional 50 km to access the Purvanchal Expressway, but once the Haldi section is operational, access to the Greenfield Expressway will be just 14 km from the city, saving nearly one hour of travel time.
Floods Impacted Construction
Project Director E.S.D. Pathak stated that flooding in the Ganga caused intermittent delays. Nevertheless, 34 underbridges and key structures have already been completed. Contractors have been instructed to ensure timely completion of the Haldi section, which will immediately benefit local commuters and transporters.
Project Overview
The Greenfield Expressway spans 132 kilometers, beginning at Jangipur in Ghazipur and extending to Manjhi Ghat near the Bihar border in Ballia. An additional 17-kilometer link road will connect to Buxar. The four-lane expressway, with an estimated cost of ₹5,500 crore, promises to improve regional connectivity, enhance economic growth, and reduce traffic congestion.
Upon full completion, the expressway will ease travel between Lucknow, Patna, and Buxar, boost trade, and create new employment opportunities. NHAI plans to open the second phase soon after the first phase becomes operational in December.
