Ayodhya’s Guptar Ghat Transforms into Ramayana-Era Setting; Open-Air Theater to Open by Holi

AYODHYA: Guptar Ghat in the holy city of Ayodhya is set to transport visitors back to the epic era of the Ramayana. As part of a major tourism development initiative, about 90% of the work has already been completed, with an open-air theater expected to be inaugurated by Holi 2026. The project features grand statues of Ravana, Hanuman, and Jatayu, bringing the spirit of the Ramayana to life for pilgrims and tourists alike.

Guptar Ghat holds immense historical and religious significance, as it is believed that Lord Shri Ram took Jal Samadhi here before ascending to the divine abode. Recognizing its spiritual and cultural importance, the Uttar Pradesh government is developing the site into a world-class tourism destination, complete with beautification, water sports facilities, modern parks, and yoga-meditation centers. The ongoing third phase of the project carries a total investment of approximately ₹18.34 crore.

Scope of the Development

The current phase primarily includes completion of the parking area, pathways, ticketing counters, guard rooms, toilet blocks, and kitchen facilities. Additionally, work is underway on the interpretation center, structural murals, and boundary walls. The centerpiece of the development is the open-air theater, which is being equipped with finishing touches, electrification, and horticultural landscaping.

The theater will host Ramayana-themed plays, bhajans, kirtans, cultural events, and Ramleela performances. Life-sized statues of Ravana, Hanuman, and Jatayu have already been installed, offering visitors a vivid glimpse of key episodes from the epic.

Project Completion Timeline

According to Manoj Kumar Sharma, Project Manager at UP Projects Corporation Limited, the project is currently two months behind schedule, with 90% of the work already completed. The entire development is expected to be finished by February 2026, and the open-air theater, along with the surrounding complex, will be opened to devotees and tourists by Holi in March.

With these enhancements, Guptar Ghat is poised to become a major cultural and spiritual hub, blending devotion, mythology, and tourism in the heart of Ayodhya.
