Ayodhya has been gripped by tension and speculation after a shocking late-night incident at the Govindgarh ashram of Mahant Maheshdas, also known as Swami Mahesh Yogi, a prominent saint associated with the Hanumangarhi Peeth. Around 2:45 AM on December 4, unidentified individuals allegedly attempted to set the saint on fire while he was asleep.
Two days later, the question still remains:
Who wants Mahant Mahesh Yogi dead?
Police teams are scanning CCTV footage, call records, and electronic surveillance data, but no breakthrough has been reported yet.
Midnight Attack: Ashram Set on Fire Through Cut Window Grill
According to police and forensic teams, the assailants cut open the rear window grill of the ashram and used what appears to be petrol to ignite the room. Mahant Mahesh Yogi, who was asleep inside, woke up only when the rising heat reached his bed.
He later told investigators that a strong smell of petrol was present at the scene. At the time of the attack, his disciples were sleeping in a separate area of the ashram.
Narrow Escape: “I Ran Out to Save My Life”
Recounting the harrowing moments, Mahesh Yogi said he woke to dense smoke and rising flames. Barely managing to escape through the door, he shouted for help. His disciples rushed to the spot and threw water and sand to douse the blaze.
Police were called immediately, and the fire was brought under control within 30 minutes. However, the bed and several belongings in the room were completely destroyed.
“Internal Dispute Behind Murder Attempt,” Claims Mahant
Mahant Mahesh Yogi has alleged that the attack was a result of internal disputes within the religious establishment. He has named several individuals, claiming they previously tried to frame him in false cases and were now plotting to kill him.
The police have recorded his statement and are probing the case from all possible angles.
Investigation Intensifies
Authorities say that forensic clues—such as cut iron grills and traces of inflammable substances—confirm that the fire was deliberately set. Ayodhya Police officials maintain that teams are tracking suspects through electronic evidence and hope to make progress soon.
As devotees and residents of the Ramnagari await answers, the incident has sparked widespread concern, raising serious questions about who is behind the attempt on the life of a respected saint, and what the motive could be.
