In a shocking incident that underscores the growing audacity of lawlessness, a police sub-inspector posted on traffic duty in Meerut’s Kharkhoda area was seriously injured after a car driver allegedly attempted to mow down on-duty police personnel. The incident later escalated into violence inside the police station, triggering widespread tension in the town.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on Wednesday evening when Sub-Inspector Shivam Mishra and Constable Gaurav Kumar were deployed to manage traffic congestion caused by the construction of a culvert in the local market area. At around that time, a speeding Hyundai i-20 car reached the spot. Police allege that the driver, identified as Shivang Tyagi, deliberately tried to run over Constable Gaurav Kumar with the intention to kill. While the constable narrowly escaped, the car ran over Sub-Inspector Shivam Mishra, causing serious injuries to his hands and legs.
Assault, Threats and Uniform Torn
Following the incident, the situation further deteriorated. The accused allegedly abused the injured sub-inspector and constable, physically assaulted them, issued death threats, and even tore the constable’s uniform. The police present at the spot immediately overpowered Shivang Tyagi and brought him to the Kharkhoda police station.
Violence Inside Police Station
However, the unrest did not end there. Shortly after the arrest, the accused’s brother Madhav Tyagi, along with his associates, stormed into the police station and assaulted a constable within the premises, creating chaos and panic. The brazen attack inside a police station raised serious concerns over law and order.
Based on the complaint lodged by the injured constable, the police have registered a case against Shivang Tyagi, Madhav Tyagi, and another unidentified individual under multiple serious sections, including attempt to murder, obstructing government duty, assault, and criminal intimidation.
Police Station Gherao, Situation Tense
As news of the incident spread, hundreds of local residents gathered outside the police station under the leadership of local chairman Manish Tyagi, staging a gherao and demanding the release of the accused. Protesters termed the incident a “minor dispute,” further escalating tension in the area. Police officials managed to pacify the crowd after sustained efforts and brought the situation under control.
Police Statement
Circle Officer (CO) Kithore Pramod Kumar Singh stated that the entire incident is being thoroughly investigated using CCTV footage from the police station and surrounding areas. “Strict legal action will be taken based on the facts that emerge during the investigation. The injured sub-inspector is undergoing treatment, and the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness,” he said.
The incident has once again raised pressing questions about the safety of on-duty police personnel and the increasing instances of mob pressure on law-enforcement agencies.
