At 65, She Refuses to Retire: Meet Mangala Awale, Maharashtra’s Inspiring Auto-Rickshaw Driver

Pune, Maharashtra: While 60 is traditionally seen as the age of retirement, 65-year-old Mangala Awale is breaking stereotypes on the busy roads connecting Karad and Undale. Affectionately called “Mangala Aaji” by locals, she drives an auto-rickshaw every day, earning ₹500–700 daily and asserting her independence.

Choosing Independence Over Dependence

Mangala refused to let age or physical discomfort define her life. Widowed at a young age, she single-handedly raised four children, working tirelessly to provide them with education and stability. Today, her son works as a driver with the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), while her daughters are married. Despite age-related health issues like diabetes, she wanted to remain financially independent and contribute to household expenses, including her medical costs.

Learning a New Skill at 65

With her son’s guidance, Mangala learned to drive an auto-rickshaw in just 15 days at the age of 65. What many younger learners might find challenging became a powerful step toward self-reliance for her. She now operates from 9 AM to 6 PM daily, ferrying passengers along the Karad–Undale route, proving that age is no barrier to productivity and dignity.

Overcoming Challenges

Mangala’s journey was not without hurdles. When authorities learned that she was driving professionally, she was instructed to comply fully with licensing regulations. Instead of being discouraged, she completed the formalities, obtained a government driving license, and overcame barriers such as limited formal education and a rural background.

Words of Wisdom

Reflecting on her journey, Mangala said:
“I realized that sitting idle benefits no one. Driving the auto-rickshaw has been an empowering decision. I earn to support my son’s household and meet my own medical needs. I have no fear of driving, and fellow drivers are considerate—they even let me go first!”

Mangala Awale’s story stands as a testament to resilience, independence, and the refusal to let age dictate life choices. Her example inspires others to embrace dignity and self-sufficiency at any stage of life.
