Guwahati: Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the Assam BJP government has fast-tracked its women’s self-employment initiative. Under the scheme, self-help group members across all 35 districts have been provided an initial capital of ₹10,000. The government aims to extend the benefits of this program to 40 lakh women across the state.
8 Lakh Women Achieve ‘Millionaire’ Status
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Tuesday that under the earlier phase of the Chief Minister’s Women Entrepreneurship Campaign (MMUA), over 15 lakh women have already received the initial ₹10,000 financial assistance. The scheme, which began on 1 April last year, initially targeted 32 lakh beneficiaries, but the goal has now been raised to 40 lakh. Official data indicates that 8 lakh women have already achieved ‘millionaire’ status, strengthening family incomes and boosting the rural economy.
Over 27,000 Women Receive ₹10,000 in Bokakhat
Taking to social media platform X, the Chief Minister wrote, “We are leaving no stone unturned to empower our women and turn their dreams into reality.” He added that following Sarupathar, more than 27,000 women in Bokakhat have received ₹10,000 assistance under the MMUA scheme.
Targeting 40 Lakh ‘Millionaire Sisters’
The MMUA scheme is a significant step toward economically empowering women. The first installment provides ₹10,000 in seed capital. Women who utilize this amount effectively are eligible for a low-interest loan of ₹25,000, with successful entrepreneurs receiving a third installment of up to ₹50,000. According to the Chief Minister, this initiative will help Assam become a self-reliant state and reduce dependence on other regions in various sectors. “Making 40 lakh women ‘Millionaire Sisters’ will give a substantial boost to the state’s economy,” he added.
