Bareilly: Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, National President of the All India Muslim Jamaat, has sharply criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his recent statements targeting the Muslim community. According to Maulana Barelvi, the CM has maintained a consistently anti-Muslim stance since taking office and is intensifying his rhetoric ahead of elections.
Allegations Against the CM
Maulana Barelvi stated that Sarma labels Muslims as illegal immigrants and Bangladeshis, subjects them to harassment, and insults them by referring to them as “Miyan.” He added, “The Chief Minister is determined to secure a second term at any cost. In the process, he has broken all records in insulting Muslims.”
Earlier, Maulana Mamlukurrahman Bark, father of Sambhal MP Ziaurrahman Bark, also reacted strongly, saying that Sarma’s statements reveal a clear animosity toward Muslims. He accused the CM of attempting to force Muslims out of India by removing their names from voter lists in Assam. “However, Indian Muslims will not leave the country and will continue to exercise their right to vote,” he added.
What the CM Said
Chief Minister Sarma reportedly instructed BJP workers to pressure the “Miyan” community to leave the state. He allegedly suggested everyday harassment tactics, such as underpaying for rickshaw rides, to force them out. Sarma’s controversial comments have sparked widespread condemnation from Muslim leaders across the country.
The remarks and ensuing backlash have added fuel to the political debate in Assam, highlighting tensions surrounding minority rights and electoral strategies.
