Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh: The death of a 12-year-old seventh-grade student at a military school in East Siang district has sparked widespread concern. The deceased was found dead on November 1 within the school campus under mysterious circumstances after going missing during a physical training session.
New allegations have emerged from the student’s family. The boy’s sister, Tadu Luniya, who was crowned Miss Arunachal 2024, claimed that senior students had allegedly harassed and tortured her brother prior to his death. In an Instagram video post, Luniya stated that while the family was initially informed that the boy had committed suicide, eyewitness accounts suggest that troubling incidents involving fellow cadets may have driven him to the fatal act.
Details of the Incident
According to Luniya, on the night of October 31, a group comprising eight 10th-grade students and three 8th-grade students entered the seventh-grade hostel after 11 PM, without any supervising authority present. Senior students reportedly forced juniors to cover their heads with blankets and took her brother to the 10th-grade hostel.
Luniya further alleged that her brother was accused of theft over a missing book and was threatened with public humiliation during assembly via video recording. Eyewitnesses informed the family that he was mentally and physically harassed throughout the night. She shared her brother’s last words, indicating the severe distress caused by the seniors.
Family’s Concerns
The bereaved sister expressed grief over the delayed post-mortem report and criticized the slow progress of the investigation. She also expressed anguish that her identity was misused in connection with her brother’s final hours.
Police Action
Arunachal Pradesh police have taken eight students into custody in connection with the case. On Tuesday, the students were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in Pasighat. The board, led by the Chief Magistrate, placed the students under the custody of the school’s deputy principal for seven days and instructed their guardians to submit affidavits as per the Juvenile Justice rules.
