Arson and Firing Resurface in Manipur’s Ukhrul, Internet Suspended, Curfew Imposed

Imphal, Manipur: Violence erupted again in Ukhrul district of Manipur, with arson and firing reported in villages around Litan. Multiple homes were set on fire overnight by armed mobs, while residents fled in fear. Although security forces are trying to contain the situation, tensions remain high. The state government has suspended internet services for five days as a precautionary measure and imposed a curfew.

Background of the Violence

The clashes were triggered after an alleged attack on a member of the Tangkhul Naga community. On Monday, armed militants set fire to several houses, prompting mass evacuations. On Tuesday morning, additional arson incidents occurred in some of the already abandoned homes, along with sporadic firing.

Police reported that the violence follows restrictions imposed by two Tangkhul Naga organizations on the movement of the Kuki community in Ukhrul and neighboring Kamjong districts.

Evacuations and Local Response

Over the past two days, hundreds of residents, including women, children, and the elderly from Kuki-majority villages, have sought refuge in safer areas. Many took shelter in Kuki-majority parts of Kangpokpi district, such as Motbung and Sekul. Videos circulating on social media show dense smoke rising from the hills, highlighting the severity of the unrest.

Local authorities expressed concerns over the delay in curbing the gunfire, which prompted criticism from fleeing villagers.

Security Measures

To restore order, the state has deployed additional security forces in the affected areas. At least 21 houses were reportedly burnt. The government has also ordered the suspension of broadband, VPN, and V-SAT internet services in Ukhrul’s revenue areas for five days to prevent the spread of misinformation and further unrest.

In a related incident, two truck drivers stranded in Lamlai Chingfei Kuki village were safely evacuated after their vehicle broke down during the unrest.

Community Tensions

The Tangkhul Naga organizations Katho Long and Katho Katmnao Long announced restrictions on Kuki community movement in Ukhrul and adjoining Kamjong district, further fueling tensions in the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and attempt to restore peace in the area.
