Annamalai Likely to Join BJP President Nitin Nabin’s National Team; Party Eyes Bigger Role for Tamil Nadu Strongman

Chennai/New Delhi: After taking charge as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nitin Nabin has begun preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections in five states. Amid this organisational reshuffle, strong indications have emerged that former IPS officer and Tamil Nadu BJP leader K. Annamalai may soon be inducted into the party’s national leadership team.

Sources within the BJP suggest that Annamalai, widely regarded as a favourite of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is being considered for a significant organisational role, possibly that of national general secretary. While the official announcement is awaited, party insiders say the elevation could be made soon.

The BJP is focusing aggressively on the elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, West Bengal and Puducherry. While the party aims to retain power in Assam, it is equally determined to make electoral inroads in West Bengal and expand its footprint in the southern states. In Tamil Nadu, the BJP has strengthened the NDA alliance under the leadership of the AIADMK to put the ruling DMK on the defensive.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Tamil Nadu on January 23, during which he launched sharp attacks on the DMK government, and earlier remarks by Home Minister Amit Shah, underline the party’s seriousness about the southern state. Against this backdrop, discussions around Annamalai’s future role have gained momentum.

Political analysts believe promoting Annamalai to a national-level position could significantly benefit the BJP’s prospects in Tamil Nadu. As the former state BJP president, Annamalai is credited with increasing the party’s vote share from around 3 per cent to nearly 11 per cent, giving the party renewed visibility in a traditionally difficult political landscape.

At just 41 years of age, Annamalai fits well into the BJP’s broader push for younger leadership, a strategy reinforced by the appointment of 45-year-old Nitin Nabin as party president. Sources indicate that Annamalai is unlikely to contest elections in the near future and may instead focus on Delhi-based organisational responsibilities.

Having quit the Indian Police Service to enter politics, K. Annamalai has carved out an aggressive image in Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian-dominated political arena and enjoys a strong following among party workers and supporters. His potential elevation is seen as a strategic move aimed at strengthening the BJP’s national leadership while sharpening its southern strategy.
