Dehradun: In the high-profile Angel Chakma murder case in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, the mother of the main accused, Suraj Khwas, has denied claims of racial abuse and targeted attack. The incident, which has drawn widespread attention, involved MBA student Angel Chakma, who succumbed to injuries sustained during an assault on 26 December.
Residing in Dhulkot area, Suraj Khwas’s mother stated that reports of racial discrimination and hate attacks circulating in the media are entirely false. “We ourselves are from the North-Eastern state of Manipur. The claims of racial abuse are baseless. Police investigations have also found no evidence of racial comments,” she said.
Dehradun SSP Ajay Singh clarified that the investigation revealed a violent clash between Suraj Khwas’s group and Angel Chakma over a market dispute. During the altercation, Shaurya Rajput struck Angel on the head with a bracelet, rendering him momentarily unconscious. Meanwhile, Yagyraj Awasthi reportedly stabbed Angel in the back using a knife picked up from a nearby egg cart. Angel was critically injured and taken to Graphics Era Hospital by his brother and acquaintances.
Hospitalization and Death:
Angel was admitted to the hospital on the evening of 9 December at 6:48 PM and was immediately shifted to the emergency unit. Under the care of Dr. Rashid AD and later neurosurgeon Dr. Piyush Pandey, Angel received treatment until his death on 26 December. Notably, no prior information regarding the assault was reported to the police control room; the victim’s family took him directly to the hospital.
Family Demands Maximum Punishment:
Angel Chakma’s family from Tripura has demanded the death penalty for all accused, emphasizing that at minimum, life imprisonment should be imposed. His uncle, Momen Chakma, stated, “Angel repeatedly identified himself as Indian, yet the attackers brutally stabbed him twice in the back and broke his neck. The government must take measures to ensure people from the North-East do not face racial hatred.”
The family has also questioned the handling of racial violence allegations by the Dehradun police and is urging authorities for strict action against the perpetrators.
