Patna, February 23, 2026: A major development has sent ripples through the Bihar police establishment after a special team from the Andhra Pradesh Police arrived in Patna to arrest senior IPS officer M. Sunil Nayak, a 2005-batch officer of the Bihar cadre and currently serving as Inspector General (IG) in the state Fire Services Department.
The team conducted an early morning operation at Nayak’s official residence located in the Shastri Nagar police station area of the city. The action follows the cancellation of his bail in a serious criminal case dating back to 2021.
Allegations Linked to 2021 CID Posting
The case pertains to events in 2021 when M. Sunil Nayak was on deputation with the Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Andhra Pradesh. He has been accused in connection with the alleged custodial assault of former Member of Parliament K. Raghu Rama Krishna Raju.
According to the complaint filed by the former MP, he was subjected to inhuman treatment and physical assault during his arrest. He further alleged that the custodial violence amounted to an attempt on his life. Acting on the complaint, a court took cognizance of the matter and directed registration of a criminal case.
Charges Under Attempt to Murder
An FIR was subsequently registered against Nayak under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which pertains to attempt to murder, along with other serious charges. The allegations state that the assault in custody posed a grave threat to the complainant’s life.
Sources indicate that while Nayak had previously secured interim legal relief, his bail was recently cancelled, prompting swift action by the Andhra Pradesh Police to take him into custody.
Arrest Process and Transit Remand
Officials from Andhra Pradesh are currently completing legal formalities in coordination with local authorities in Patna. Following arrest procedures, Nayak is expected to be produced before a local court to obtain transit remand. Upon securing the remand, he will be transported to Andhra Pradesh—either by air or road—for further legal proceedings.
Security around his Patna residence has been tightened amid heightened media attention and administrative scrutiny.
The case has drawn considerable attention due to the senior rank of the officer involved and the serious nature of the charges. Further developments are expected as the legal process unfolds in Andhra Pradesh.
