Anant Singh Takes Oath in Bihar Assembly, Seeks Blessings from CM Nitish Kumar

Patna, February 3:
Notorious strongman and Janata Dal (United) MLA Anant Singh took oath as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, nearly 51 days after the election results, following permission from the court.

Dressed in a stylish blazer, with a traditional tilak on his forehead and garlands adorning his neck, Anant Singh arrived at the Assembly amid considerable attention. After taking the oath, he signed the official register and formally greeted Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar.

As he exited the House, Anant Singh came face to face with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. In a symbolic gesture, Singh touched the Chief Minister’s feet and sought his blessings. The two leaders then exchanged folded-hand greetings and briefly interacted. Nitish Kumar reciprocated by raising his hand in acknowledgment before Anant Singh proceeded to leave. Several legislators closely observed Singh’s demeanor inside the Assembly.

A Relationship Spanning Two Decades

The political association between Anant Singh and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar dates back nearly two decades. Their proximity became evident during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, when Singh played a crucial role as a key local supporter for Nitish Kumar in the Barh parliamentary constituency. Following Nitish Kumar’s rise to power in 2005, Anant Singh was elected as an MLA from Mokama on a JD(U) ticket.

However, political differences and criminal cases led to a rift between the two in 2015, resulting in Singh’s expulsion from the party. He later emerged as a vocal critic of Nitish Kumar. Despite past hostilities, the relationship has since been mended, and Anant Singh has returned to the JD(U) fold.

Who Is Anant Singh?

Popularly known as “Chhote Sarkar,” Anant Singh is among Bihar’s most influential and controversial political figures. A five-time MLA from the Mokama constituency in Patna district, Singh commands a strong grassroots following. His political career, however, has been marred by multiple criminal cases, leading to imprisonment on several occasions. Recently, despite losing his membership after being convicted in a case, he made a political comeback by winning the latest Assembly elections.

Currently Lodged in Jail

Anant Singh is presently lodged in Beur Jail, Patna, in connection with the Dularchand Yadav murder case. The incident occurred during the 2025 Bihar Assembly election campaign, when a violent clash allegedly led to the killing of Dularchand Yadav, a supporter of the Jan Suraj Party, on October 30, 2025. Singh was named as the prime accused and arrested on November 2, 2025. With his bail plea rejected by the court, Singh returned to judicial custody after taking oath on Tuesday.
