AMU Student Dies by Suicide While on Video Call with Father, Succumbs at Hospital

Aligarh: A tragic incident has come to light from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), where a 20-year-old female student allegedly died by suicide inside her hostel room while speaking to her father on a video call. The incident has sent shockwaves across the university campus.

The deceased student, identified as Insha Fatima, a resident of Azamgarh, was pursuing a diploma in Computer Science (final year) at AMU. She was staying in SN Hall, Room No. 113B. On Monday evening at around 7:15 PM, Insha was alone in her room, as her roommate had gone home on leave.

According to preliminary information, Insha was talking to her father—who resides in Saudi Arabia—via video call on her laptop. During the conversation, she suddenly used her dupatta to make a noose and attempted to hang herself from the ceiling fan. Her father, witnessing the horrifying scene live on video, immediately alerted a relative working at AMU.

The relative rushed to the hostel and informed the hostel staff and the university’s proctorial team. When they reached the room, the door was found open and Insha was hanging and struggling. She was immediately brought down and rushed to JN Medical College, where she was admitted to the ICU. Despite intensive medical efforts, she succumbed nearly three hours later, late at night.

Police officials stated that no suicide note was found in the room. The room has been sealed and a detailed investigation has been initiated. Insha’s uncle, who lives in Lucknow, left for Aligarh as soon as he received information about the incident.

AMU Proctor Prof. Wasim Ali confirmed the incident and said that the university authorities informed the police immediately after the matter came to light. Following the incident, there was a sense of shock and unrest across the campus.

City SP Mrigank Shekhar Pathak said that the case appears to be one of suicide and occurred while the student was on a video call with her father. “The reason behind the extreme step is not clear at this stage. The matter is being investigated, and the cause will be ascertained after speaking with family members and completing the inquiry,” he said.

The incident has once again raised concerns about students’ mental health and the need for stronger counseling and support systems within educational institutions.
