Alleged Medical Negligence at Banda Medical College Costs Five-Year-Old Girl Her Leg

Banda, Uttar Pradesh:
In a deeply disturbing case of alleged medical negligence, a five-year-old girl from Banda district has reportedly lost her leg following improper treatment at Rani Durgavati Medical College, triggering widespread concern and an official investigation.

The victim, Manvi, daughter of Anil Kumar, a resident of Padai village, sustained a fracture after falling from the roof of her house on December 23, 2025. She was immediately taken to Rani Durgavati Medical College for treatment. The family has alleged that an orthopaedic doctor applied an excessively tight plaster on the child’s injured leg, which severely affected blood circulation.

According to the family, due to restricted blood flow, the child’s condition gradually worsened and serious infection set in. Despite being admitted to the hospital for several days, they claim that neither proper monitoring nor timely corrective treatment was provided.

As her condition deteriorated, the child was taken to the operation theatre on December 29, but doctors reportedly expressed their inability to manage the case and referred her to Lucknow. The family then rushed the girl to King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, where doctors advised immediate amputation due to the advanced infection.

In a final attempt to save her limb, the family shifted the child to a super-specialty hospital, where surgeons performed bone reconstruction surgery. However, the infection had already spread extensively, leaving doctors with no option but to amputate the leg, permanently disabling the minor.

Following the incident, the victim’s father, Anil Kumar, lodged a formal complaint with the District Magistrate. Taking serious note of the matter, the District Magistrate directed the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to conduct a thorough inquiry and assured impartial action.

Responding to the allegations, Dr. S.K. Kaushal, Principal of Rani Durgavati Medical College, stated that no written orders regarding the inquiry had been received so far and that an investigation would be initiated immediately upon receipt. Meanwhile, CMO Anil Kumar confirmed that, as per the District Magistrate’s instructions, the medical college principal has been directed to constitute a committee of orthopaedic specialists to probe the case. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry report.

The incident has raised serious questions about medical accountability and patient safety in government healthcare institutions, particularly when it involves the life and future of a minor.
