Alert! Chinese Garlic Flooding UP Markets; Major Consignment Seized in Maharajganj — Read This Before You Buy

Smuggling of Chinese garlic along the Nepal border has once again gained momentum, triggered by the recent surge in garlic prices across Indian markets. With domestic rates touching ₹160–170 per kg, smugglers are importing garlic from Nepal at ₹70–80 per kg and selling it in Indian cities for hefty profits. A major consignment seized recently in Bhitouli police station limits has brought the entire network under the scanner.

Health experts have issued a strong caution, warning consumers that Chinese garlic is considered harmful for health, urging people to remain vigilant while purchasing.

Smugglers Using Women and Children to Evade Security

Sources reveal that smugglers are now employing women and children to transport garlic across the border in order to dodge security agencies. The Nautanwa–Nichlaul belt, known for its bustling vegetable trade, has become an active transit route.

Around 250 traders are registered in the Naveen Sabzi Mandi, Nichlaul, with 30–40 of them operating regularly. The mandi’s online portal allows traders to ship produce directly to major cities — a system smugglers are exploiting to push Chinese garlic into Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, and other urban markets.

High Demand Due to Attractive Look and Size

Chinese garlic, known for its large and shiny cloves, attracts buyers and often fetches a higher price than desi garlic. Smugglers reportedly dump the garlic in border villages before distributing it to local traders, who then circulate it through regular supply chains.

Customs Department Tightens Vigilance

D.K. Asthana, Superintendent of Customs, Nichlaul, said strict surveillance is being maintained along the border. The SSB, local police, and multiple enforcement agencies are conducting continuous operations to curb illegal trade.

He warned the public to stay alert:
“Chinese garlic is considered harmful to health. People must be cautious while purchasing.”
