Alankar Agnihotri Follows Mother’s Footsteps, Resigns from City Magistrate Post Over Principle

Kanpur: Former City Magistrate Alankar Agnihotri, who recently announced his resignation during the ongoing Magh Mela in Prayagraj over the controversial Shankaracharya dispute, has drawn attention for a family legacy of principled decisions. Agnihotri stated that he was deeply distressed by the handling of the event by police and administration, particularly their treatment of Swami Avimukteshwaranand’s disciples, prompting him to step down from his post.

A Family Tradition of Upholding Dignity
Interestingly, Alankar’s mother, Geeta Agnihotri, also resigned from her long-standing job as a cashier at Bank of Badoda to protect her self-respect. According to family members, when a bank manager attempted to assign her work in a manner she considered demeaning, she refused to compromise on her dignity and chose to resign after 21 years of service. Alankar has now followed the same principle, making a historic statement through his resignation.

Career Journey of Alankar Agnihotri
Alankar Agnihotri completed his B.Tech from IIT BHU and worked in Bangalore, Norway, and the USA until 2017. Upon returning to India, he decided to pursue a career in civil services after being advised that he was beyond the IAS age limit. He joined the PCS preparation and secured an impressive fifth rank on his first attempt in 2019. Despite having no prior connection to Swami Avimukteshwaranand, the way he and his colleagues were treated at the Magh Mela deeply affected him.

Family Support and Legacy
According to Alankar’s uncle, S.K. Singh, the family has always upheld dignity above all else. Following the death of Alankar’s younger brother Vijay, Geeta Agnihotri worked tirelessly to raise four sons and a daughter. Alankar first ensured his younger siblings and sister were self-reliant before attempting and successfully passing the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission exam. Though his resignation after six years of service was a shock to his mother, the family stands united in supporting his principled stand.
