Akhilesh Yadav Criticizes BJP Over ‘Vande Mataram’ Discussion, Questions Indigo Flight Disruptions

Lucknow: During a special discussion in the Lok Sabha on Vande Mataram, Samajwadi Party president and Kannauj MP Akhilesh Yadav launched a sharp attack on the BJP, raising concerns over the political misuse of the patriotic song and also highlighting the ongoing Indigo flight disruptions.

Vande Mataram: A Symbol of Unity
Akhilesh Yadav reminded members that Vande Mataram was more than a song—it was an inspiring slogan during India’s struggle for freedom, uniting millions and giving them energy. He noted that the British had banned it between 1905 and 1908, prosecuting those who sang it, yet its spirit never faded from Indian hearts. “Vande Mataram brings people together and energizes them. Its essence cannot be reduced to mere performance,” Yadav said.

Criticism of the Ruling Party
The former Chief Minister accused the BJP of attempting to appropriate national symbols and historical legacies that do not originate from them. “The ruling party tries to claim ownership of great traditions and figures, even when they were not part of their history. Nationalism is more than singing songs; it must be lived,” Yadav stated.

He cited the example of Vande Mataram, arguing that while some currently showcase it for political purposes, they did not genuinely embrace it during the freedom movement or in the post-independence era. “The current government uses patriotic symbols selectively for divisive politics,” he added.

Allegations of Misuse and Political Exploitation
Akhilesh highlighted that images of leaders like Jayaprakash Narayan and B.R. Ambedkar are often used during elections for political gain without honoring their principles. He warned that Vande Mataram should not be exploited to sow division, stressing that the song represents unity and national pride above caste and religion.

Indigo Flights in Focus
Turning to contemporary issues, Akhilesh questioned why Indigo flights are not operating as scheduled, suggesting that passengers and the public deserve transparency and accountability.

Call for National Spirit Over Politics
Concluding his remarks, Akhilesh emphasized that the discussion was not political but an opportunity to strengthen the national spirit. “The essence of Vande Mataram is unity, not hatred. Two words are enough to ignite patriotism in a true Indian. Let us all work together to strengthen our country rather than impose narrow views on others,” he urged.
