AIMIM Turns the Tide in Seemanchal, Splits Votes and Boosts NDA on 20 Seats

Patna: The Bihar Assembly Election 2025 has delivered an unexpected political twist in the Muslim-dominated Seemanchal region. As counting trends continue to unfold, the NDA appears to be sweeping the region—an outcome largely attributed to the vote-cutting impact of Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM.

According to early trends available till 11 AM, the NDA is leading on nearly 20 out of 24 Assembly seats in Seemanchal, a region traditionally considered a stronghold of the Mahagathbandhan. The swing in voter sentiment is being widely credited to the significant vote share AIMIM has managed to attract, denting the RJD–Congress alliance.

AIMIM’s Influence Shakes Up Seemanchal Dynamics

AIMIM had won five seats in the 2020 Assembly elections, although most of its MLAs later switched sides to join RJD. Despite that setback, Owaisi campaigned aggressively in Seemanchal this year, focusing on Muslim representation and alleging that secular parties had long taken the community for granted.

His message seems to have resonated. Muslim voters across multiple constituencies appear to have shifted towards AIMIM, splitting the traditional Mahagathbandhan vote bank and indirectly paving the way for NDA’s strong performance.

NDA Gains Big in a Region Once Seen as Weak

Seemanchal comprises Kishanganj, Araria, Purnia, and Katihar districts, where Muslim voters range from 30% to 65%. Despite NDA being perceived as weak here, the current trends show a dramatic shift.

  • BJP is contesting 11 seats
  • JD(U) 10 seats
  • LJP 3 seats
  • AIMIM 15 seats

Congress is contesting 12 seats and RJD 9 seats in this region.

Why Seemanchal Shift Matters

Seemanchal has historically been a Mahagathbandhan bastion due to its high Muslim population. This time, however, AIMIM’s direct appeal to Muslim voters has fractured the alliance’s vote bank—giving NDA an unprecedented advantage.
