AI Took His Job, So 18-Year-Old ‘Bunty and Babli’ Turned to Crime, Steal Jewelry Worth ₹16 Lakh

In a startling case from Indore, police have recovered jewelry worth over ₹16 lakh stolen from a local shop. The culprits, an 18-year-old graphic designer and his companion, allegedly carried out the theft inspired by the Bollywood film ‘Bunty Aur Babli’.

Details of the Heist
The theft occurred on 22 December at a jewelry store in the Rau area, where gold, silver, and diamond ornaments worth ₹16.17 lakh were stolen. Police have successfully apprehended the young couple. According to DCP Shri Krishna Lalchandani, both suspects are 18 years old. The boy works as a graphic designer, while the girl is preparing for NEET exams. The two have known each other since childhood.

Job Loss Due to AI Triggered Crime
During interrogation, the boy revealed that he had been employed part-time with an IT company, but his job was terminated after the company adopted AI technology. Facing financial difficulties, the duo—both from economically weaker families—planned the theft after watching the Hindi movie ‘Bunty Aur Babli’.

Couldn’t Find the Right Buyer
After committing the theft, the pair fled but were later caught in Bhopal. They stated that they attempted to sell the stolen jewelry but were offered very low prices as buyers considered them inexperienced. The couple had planned to sell the ornaments after the Christmas holidays.

The police have recovered all stolen items, bringing relief to the jewelry shop owner, and have initiated further investigations into the duo’s network and possible accomplices.
