Agra/Prayagraj: The case of 13-year-old Gauri, who became “Sadhvi Gauri” during this year’s Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, has taken another dramatic turn. Months after reports surfaced that the minor from Agra had been “donated” by her family to the Juna Akhara, the narrative has changed once again.
Earlier this year, the controversy erupted when Juna Akhara expelled Mahant Kaushal Giri after allegations that the girl had been pushed into renunciation at a tender age. Gauri was subsequently placed under the care of Agra’s Nari Niketan for protection and counselling.
Returned to Family, Then Escaped Back to Her Guru
A few days ago, the minor was officially handed over to her parents. However, in a surprising move, she left home soon after and travelled to Haryana to live again with her guru, Mahant Kaushal Giri.
Alarmed, the family filed a complaint with Dhaoki Police Station. Acting swiftly, Agra Police traced the girl to Haryana on November 13 and brought her back. After further counselling, she was once again reunited with her parents.
“Mahant Misled My Daughter,” Says Mother
The girl’s mother has now made a serious allegation, claiming that Mahant Kaushal Giri had influenced and misled her daughter into renouncing the world.
“We are relieved that she is back home. She was misguided,” the mother said.
“I Want to Study Now,” Says Gauri
Following counselling, Gauri herself has expressed that her outlook has changed.
The 13-year-old now says she wants to focus on education, build a future, and “do something meaningful” with her life.
“I want to study and make my family and country proud,” she told police officials.
Family Relieved, Police Thanked
Her parents, who had been anxious since the incident, have thanked Agra Police for their timely intervention and support. The case has once again highlighted concerns around minors being drawn into religious renunciation.
