Agra:In a rare and emotional example of deep love for animals, a family in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, bid a heartfelt farewell to their pet Labrador dog after its death — treating it no less than a beloved son. The family performed the dog’s last rites following traditional Hindu rituals, including a funeral procession, cremation, mundan, havan, tehravi, and even a brahmbhoj.
The incident took place in Shahdara Bagichi locality, where resident Ghanshyam Dixit had adopted a Labrador dog around 14 years ago from Delhi. The dog was named Tiger and was raised with immense affection, becoming an inseparable part of the household.
Dog Was Part of the Family for 14 Years
According to Ghanshyam Dixit, Tiger was not just a pet but a family member who stood with them through every joy and sorrow. The dog reportedly fell ill about a month ago, and despite continuous treatment, its condition did not improve. Tiger eventually passed away on January 28.
The family was left devastated, as the dog had lived with them for nearly one and a half decades.
Funeral Procession Taken Out in the Neighbourhood
Following Tiger’s death, the family organised a funeral procession through the neighbourhood, in which several local residents also participated. Later, Tiger was cremated with full rituals at Rajghat on the banks of the Ganga, located in Bulandshahr.
The farewell ceremony was conducted with religious traditions usually reserved for humans, reflecting the emotional bond the family shared with their pet.
Tehravi, Havan and Brahmbhoj Performed
Thirteen days after the cremation, the family organised Tiger’s tehravi ceremony. A havan was performed for the peace of the dog’s soul, and a brahmbhoj was also arranged, during which 13 Brahmins were served food as per Hindu customs.
The family also placed a large photograph of Tiger and offered prayers with devotion.
Tiger Was Given Daily Tilak, Known as ‘Tilakdhari’
Ghanshyam Dixit shared that Tiger used to receive a daily tilak on his forehead, which earned him the nickname ‘Tilakdhari’ among neighbours. The dog was loved and respected not only within the family but also by the surrounding community.
A Rare Example of Animal Love
The incident has drawn attention across the city, with many people calling it a touching example of compassion and emotional attachment towards animals. For the Dixit family, Tiger was never just a dog — he was their child, and they ensured that his farewell was as dignified and respectful as that of a human family member.
