Bharatpur (Rajasthan): In a scene straight out of a film, a family from Uttarakhand was reunited with their son—whom they had believed dead for nearly a year and a half. Tears, disbelief, and overwhelming emotion filled the “Apna Ghar Ashram” in Bharatpur on Monday, as 28-year-old Umesh suddenly stood alive before his grieving mother and sister.
Disappeared During Mental Illness, Presumed Dead
According to reports, Umesh, a resident of Nainital, went missing in May 2024 due to mental health issues. His mother, Tara Devi, and sister, Prema Devi, searched for him tirelessly. Despite registering a missing person complaint at Lal Kuan police station, they received no leads.
Months turned into a year, hope faded, and the family eventually accepted that Umesh was no longer alive.
Rescued in Jodhpur, Shifted to Bharatpur for Treatment
Unknown to the family, Umesh had been rescued by the Apna Ghar Ashram team in Jodhpur. On 22 May 2025, he was transferred to the Bharatpur branch for treatment and care.
“After internal treatment and continuous counselling, Umesh’s condition improved significantly,” said Basant Lal Gupta, secretary of the Ashram. “A few days ago, he recalled details of his family, which allowed us to contact them immediately.”
The moment the Ashram informed the family that Umesh was alive, his mother and sister broke down over the phone, struggling to believe what they were hearing.
A Heart-Wrenching Reunion
When Tara Devi and Prema reached the Ashram and saw Umesh, emotions overflowed. The mother collapsed to the ground, crying uncontrollably. Prema ran straight into her brother’s arms, and the two clung to each other, sobbing for several minutes.
Even the Ashram staff, accustomed to emotional scenes, could not hold back their tears.
“We had searched for him everywhere,” Prema said. “We filed complaints, visited towns, spoke to countless people… but found nothing. We had lost all hope. Getting him back today is nothing short of God’s miracle.”
Not the First Miracle at the Ashram
This is not the first time Apna Ghar Ashram has witnessed such a dramatic reunion.
In 2015, an elderly woman from Assam—believed dead for years—was found at the same Bharatpur Ashram, nearly 2,000 km away from her home. Her son travelled across the country, and the mother–son reunion moved everyone present to tears.
