New Delhi: In a horrific incident, a 65-year-old woman was brutally murdered in Delhi after she resisted a man who allegedly followed her with the intent to sexually assault her. The accused attacked her with a sharp weapon, dragged her body into nearby bushes, and fled the scene. Police have arrested the suspect, who has confessed to the crime during interrogation.
Accused Confesses; Had Come to Delhi for a Court Hearing
According to police sources, the accused—identified as 24-year-old Salman—had travelled from Bharuch, Gujarat, to Delhi to attend a court hearing related to a previous case involving the kidnapping and sexual assault of a minor. He was out on bail in that case.
Investigators revealed that on the night of the incident, the accused roamed the area after consuming alcohol. He spotted the elderly woman walking alone near the Adarsh Nagar railway station and began trailing her. When he attempted to overpower her and she resisted, he attacked her with a chopper-like sharp weapon, delivering multiple blows to her head.
He then dragged the body into dense bushes near the railway tracks. Evidence from the crime scene indicated signs pointing to post-mortem sexual assault, which the accused later admitted during questioning.
Body Found in Semi-Nude Condition
On the morning of 16 November, a GRP personnel alerted Mahendra Park Police Station after discovering the woman’s blood-soaked, semi-nude body in the bushes near Adarsh Nagar railway station. Senior officers reached the spot immediately. The woman’s clothes were torn, and her head bore deep wounds inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon.
Footwear belonging to both a male and female was recovered from the scene. During investigation, the victim was identified as a resident of Holambi Kalan. She had been living alone after being abandoned by her husband years earlier and earned her livelihood by working at Azadpur Mandi. She often slept near the railway station at night.
Key CCTV Clues Lead to Breakthrough
Police located CCTV cameras near the spot and found footage of a man wearing floaters heading towards the area and returning barefoot. The visuals helped investigators trace him to the Azadpur Mandi vicinity, where several locals identified him. His family residence in Jahangirpuri was raided, but he had already travelled back to Gujarat.
Further investigation revealed that he had a scheduled hearing in his earlier rape case on 16 November. A police team waited at the court premises, but he did not appear. Later technical surveillance confirmed his presence in Gujarat, where a team eventually arrested him.
Disturbing Sequence of Events Revealed in Interrogation
During questioning, Salman admitted that he had come to Delhi on November 15 for his court hearing. After consuming alcohol that evening, he wandered the locality with the intention of committing a sexual assault. At around 11:30 PM, he spotted the victim walking alone and attacked her when she resisted his attempt to drag her into the bushes.
Police have added charges of murder along with offences related to sexual assault. The investigation is ongoing, and the accused remains in police custody.
