Shahjahanpur: In a tragic incident, a 65-year-old man from Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, took his own life, reportedly due to mounting debts and a pending electricity bill of ₹32,000. Before ending his life, Kamendra Vikram Singh wrote a note addressed to the Chief Minister, appealing for relief from his electricity dues and urging that his children not be troubled.
Kamendra lived with his wife and had two sons and a daughter, all of whom are married. On Wednesday morning, everything seemed normal, but shortly after leaving his home, he hanged himself from a tree outside the house. The family was left in shock upon discovering the body.
During the search, police recovered a suicide note from his pocket, addressed to the Chief Minister. The note mentioned his electricity bill, existing private loans, and a plea to protect his children from harassment.
Struggling for Months
Family members revealed that Kamendra had been distressed for the past two to three months, though he had not disclosed the reasons. Officials including the SDM and CO visited the site after the suicide note was discovered. While the family initially refused a post-mortem, they later agreed following police persuasion.
Electricity Bill Trigger
The 65-year-old reportedly sought to settle his electricity dues through the One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme but was unable to avail the benefit for unspecified reasons. Authorities told him he would need to pay ₹17,000 in installments, which added to his stress.
Family Background
Kamendra’s elder son, Saurabh Singh (also known as Aditya Vikram Singh), works in a pesticide company, while his younger son, Achyut Vikram Singh, is a teacher at a private school and lives with his wife in a rented house.
Police Statement
SP Rajesh Dwivedi confirmed the suicide and stated that the note has been seized for investigation. He added that a post-mortem was conducted and that the family has not made any allegations. The case is under further investigation.
