
Jaipur, Rajasthan: A recent district-level survey has found that 3,768 government school buildings in Rajasthan are in a dilapidated condition, Education Minister Madan Dilawar informed the state Assembly during the budget session on Friday. The data was revealed in response to a question raised by BJP MLA Sandeep Sharma.
Survey Triggered by Tragic Jhalawar Incident
The survey followed a tragic incident in Jhalawar district, where part of a government school building collapsed, killing seven children. In the aftermath, the state government ordered district-level inspections of all government school buildings, which led to the current findings.
Status of Dilapidated Buildings
Out of the 3,768 identified buildings, 2,558 have been officially declared dilapidated, while the remaining 1,210 are under the process of formal declaration. Demolition and reconstruction of these buildings are underway as per government regulations.
Repair Needs Across the State
Rajasthan has a total of 45,365 government schools, of which 41,178 require extensive repairs. Under the 2025–26 budget, the state has sanctioned ₹174.97 crore for repair work in 2,000 schools. Additionally, repairs for buildings damaged by floods and excessive rainfall have been approved for 20,383 schools under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), based on reports from district authorities.
Proposals for New Buildings
For the 3,768 dilapidated schools, proposals for new construction of 1,680 schools have been sent to the Ministry of Education, Government of India, with a total fund requirement of ₹1,998.24 crore for approval.
Minister Dilawar emphasized that the government is prioritizing both repair and reconstruction to ensure safe infrastructure for students across Rajasthan.
