Maihar, Madhya Pradesh: A sad chapter has unfolded at the Maharaja Martand Singh Judev White Tiger Safari & Zoo in Mukundpur, Maihar, as the zoo’s famed female leopard ‘Panna’ passed away at the age of 20. The majestic leopard, who had been a major attraction for visitors over the last five years, succumbed to old age despite continuous medical care.
Rescued from Panna Forests in 2020
Panna’s journey to Mukundpur Zoo began on December 12, 2020, when she was rescued from the Mohandra range of the South Panna Forest Division. Following the rescue, she was safely transported to Mukundpur Zoo. The Central Zoo Authority, New Delhi, formally approved her residence at the zoo on March 4, 2025, allowing her to remain under proper care and observation.
Medical Supervision Until the End
Dr. Nitin Gupta, the zoo’s wildlife veterinarian, revealed that Panna’s health had been steadily declining due to her advanced age. Despite continuous monitoring and treatment, her condition did not improve. On the morning of January 2, 2026, at approximately 6:48 AM, Panna passed away peacefully.
Samples Sent for Further Examination
Following her death, the veterinary team conducted a thorough post-mortem examination, confirming that the primary cause of death was natural aging. Samples of her organs and viscera were sent to the School of Wildlife Forensic Health at Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University, Jabalpur, for detailed analysis.
Panna was accorded a dignified farewell, with her cremation conducted in the presence of the Chief Conservator of Forests, Rewa, and other senior officials, following full protocol.
Panna’s legacy will continue to inspire wildlife conservation efforts and remain etched in the memories of all who admired her grace and strength.
